New Release-Review & Giveaway: KYLE (Legacy #1) by RJ Scott

Release Blitz & Giveaway

RJ Scott - Kyle (Legacy #1)

Blurb

Two men destroyed by the past learn to live-and love-again.
Kyle Braden has nowhere else to go. With no money, no prospects, and no drive to be something else, he turns to the only man who promises him help. Jack Campbell-Hayes wants to show Kyle that he can be more than he ever thought.

Kyle gets to realize just how far he's come from being the scarred man who shut everyone out, when the first person through the doors of Legacy Ranch carries a gun and threatens to kill anyone who comes near him. Kyle wants to be the man that someone turns to for help and it scares him.

Thrown out of his house and with three years on the streets marking every inch of his body, Jason Smith is scared. His life is an evil mess of hate and despair, and even the offer of a fresh start and a clean bed isn't enough for him to hand over his gun. He's cheated death twice, and he's not letting there be a third time-he might not be so lucky.

For these broken men, Legacy Ranch offers more than a place to live and work.

It offers hope.

A new story set in the world of Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes and the Double D Ranch, Texas.

Carra's Review

Stories with one lead character with a damaged past to overcome with the help of the other lead character are a favorite of mine, and in this story we get not just one, but both leads with personal history to move past.  Kyle and Jason have both had hard lives, which naturally ups the angst factor for this book.  Their relationship takes a while to develop, and honestly at first glance it doesn't seem like the two really click with each other.

Kyle has a past filled with abuse, and is always on guard around others because of it.  He constantly is evaluating the threat of anyone he comes into close proximity with, always making sure he has a way out of any situation.  Even though he's proved his worth on the ranch-enough for him to be placed in a position of authority-he's always on the edge, thinking at any moment he'll be told to go.  Jason has had a life on the streets for many years, doing what he must to survive and get by even as he dreams of a way to start over.  After things spiral down and he finds himself in a bad situation, he is brought to Legacy for a fresh start.  He has his ups and downs mentally, and wants nothing to do with the horses at the ranch when he arrives.

As Kyle and Jason get to know each other, they become a support system for each other.  Kyle gradually introduces Jason to the horses-which play a role for both men in helping them heal-and the two of them grow closer slowly.  I honestly wasn't feeling a connection between them other than for support until quite far into the story, and even then it wasn't a passionate type of relationship.  It really was more about being there for each other, with some physical aspects following as they come to rely upon each other.  To me, it didn't quite feel like love, it was more like an insanely deep, supportive, caring rapport that just grew stronger the longer they were with each other.

The story carries a lot of emotion, and does deal with serious topics of sexual abuse and male prostitution.  These men have led harsh lives, and this story allows them the opportunity to find someone to care for as they both start to heal.  I really liked how the horses helped both of them-particularly Jason.  The supporting characters do exactly that-they support both Kyle and Jason unconditionally (something neither man can believe is without something being wanted in return-though they are very wrong in their thinking), though nothing could match what they are to each other.

An emotional story with an extremely slow burn, Kyle was a 4-star read for me and I'd recommend it to M/M romance fans who enjoy hurt/comfort type stories.  While there's not a lot of physically intimate scenes, this story is still meant for readers 18+ due to adult language and situations (including the previously mentioned abuse) and M/M sexual content.  This is a great start to this spin-off series, and I'm really looking forward to the rest of it!
