New Release-Review & Giveaway: BARGING IN by Josephine Myles

Length: 93,000 words

Blurb

When the boat's a rockin', don't come knockin'!

Out-and-proud travel writer Dan Taylor is a city boy who can't steer a boat to save his life, but that doesn't stop him from heading into the English countryside to write up a narrowboat holiday. Compared to London, the canal seems dull as ditchwater. Until he crashes into the boat of a half-naked, tattooed man whose bad-boy, penniless appearance doesn't fit with his posh accent. Dan is intrigued, and he always gets his man.

Still smarting from a past betrayal, Robin Hamilton is firmly closeted in his narrowboat-his refuge from outrageous, provocative men like Dan. But as circumstances keep throwing them together, he can't help himself from coming to the hopelessly out-of-place city boy's rescue. Exposure to Dan's sunny charm starts to melt Robin's resolve and he's tempted by the idea of a brief, harmless fling.

After all, in less than a week, Dan will have left the canal and be back to his diet of casual hook-ups and friends with benefits.

Determined not to fall in love, both men dive into one week of indulgence...only to find themselves swept away by a current of escalating intimacy and emotional intensity. Troubled waters they didn't anticipate... and haven't a clue how to navigate.

Warning: Contains one lovable tart, one posh boy gone feral, rough sex, alfresco sex, vile strawberry flavoured condoms, intimate body piercings, red thermal long-johns, erotic woodchopping, an errant cat, a few colourful characters you wouldn't touch with a bargepole, and plenty of messing about on the river.

Carra's Review

Barging In is exactly the type of story I look for when I want something mostly lighthearted, sweet with a nice dose of heat, and with a unique setting that helps keep an everyday trope—playboy meets the one—fresh and fun.  Besides that, now it has me thinking of taking my own boating holiday ;-)  It did take me a little bit to warm up to the pairing of Dan and Robin, but once I did I became enamored with their interesting matchup.

Dan is a typical single playboy, independent and with a modest amount of success as a travel writer, ready to party in the city and fool around with whoever takes his fancy at the time.  Robin is quite the opposite—reserved and quiet, preferring a more solitary, simple life out on the water.  He rebelled against his fancier upbringing, choosing tattoos, piercings and living off his hard work instead of following the more posh lifestyle he’d grown up enjoying.  These two are definitely a bit of a mismatch, so not only do we have our playboy Dan meeting someone who just might tame his ways, but we also get two opposites attracting—always a fun element to add to a story.

Usually with opposites falling for each other, you see each of them changing to become a bit like the other (or at least that’s the way the majority of the stories I read seem to go).  But here, we find most of the changes coming from Dan, made especially evident once his travel writing holiday time is up and he has to go back home.  It’s at that point that the angst starts to really creep in, and both men’s feelings start to become truly exposed.

Barging In was a very solid 4-star read for me, and I’d definitely recommend it as a good all-around M/M romance (especially if you like the tropes I mentioned earlier).  It is meant for readers 18+ for adult language along with sexual content, and there is some casual drug use mentioned (marijuana) as well.

She writes gay erotica and romance, but finds the erotica keeps cuddling up to the romance, and the romance keeps corrupting the erotica. Jo blames her rebellious muse but he never listens to her anyway, no matter how much she threatens him with a big stick. She's beginning to suspect he enjoys it.

Jo's novel Stuff won the 2014 Rainbow Award for Best Bisexual Romance, and her novella Merry Gentlemen won the 2014 Rainbow Award for Best Gay Romantic Comedy. She loves to be busy, and is currently having fun trying to work out how she is going to fit in her love of writing, dressmaking and attending cabaret shows in fabulous clothing around the demands of a preteen with special needs and an incessantly curious toddler.

An Excerpt from the Book

Take an inside look at Love At First Crepe. Read this sizzling excerpt from the book.
Unfortunately, my sense of self-preservation seemed to be on vacation. I was completely frozen in fear, unable to move for what seemed like years. The giant didn't move either, and I wondered why. Strangely enough, he seemed just as surprised as I was that he was in my living room. We looked at each other, his beady eyes visible through the holes of his ski mask. The synapses in my brain finally began to fire, and I jumped into action, kicking the intruder as hard as I could in the groin. He groaned in pain and clumsily took a swipe at me with the knife as he sank to his knees.

I rolled out of his path and jumped swiftly to my feet. Unfortunately, the maneuver didn't work exactly as I planned. I lost my towel in the process and was startled to remember that I was completely naked underneath. My lack of clothing was the least of my worries. I had far bigger fish to fry.

I darted into the kitchen and ducked behind the counter. He rose slowly and lumbered toward me. Think, Willow, think!

The man was huge, larger than any human I'd ever seen. I made a quick mental note that his terrifying size might also work against him. Conversely, I was small and quick, and I was determined to use these things to my advantage. I didnít have much else. As he drew close to me, I sprinted back into the living room. Until I figured out what to do next, I had to stay out of his way.

To be honest, I didn't have much to offer in the strength department, and I fleetingly wished that I would have paid more attention to weight training at some point in my life. There was no time for regrets at that moment though, so I took quick stock of what I could use to fight back. There was a large paperweight on the table in the foyer. If I could get to that, I could smash him in the head with it. Of course, if I managed to get that far, I'd be better off running out the front door. I thought about my ballet classes and made a list of moves I could use for self-defense. Granted, it wasn't much, but it was all I had.

A grand battement might do the trick. I could bring my foot right up to his face and take him out, with my toes perfectly pointed of course. Given his size though, I doubted if my foot would reach that far. I groaned, wishing I had some martial arts experience instead. Ballet wasn't exactly famous for its self-defense tactics, but it would have to do. Rich girls weren't brought up to fight intruders. That's what Dad paid the bodyguards to do.

I jumped behind the couch, thankful that there was at least a large piece of furniture between me and the colossus. I was hopeful that one of my neighbors might overhear the altercation, although I knew that was a long shot. I could die there and no one would know until some unlucky neighbor smelled my rotting flesh from the hallway.

Review & Giveaway: SAVING SEBASTIAN by Luna David (A Catharsis Novel, Custos Securities #3)

Blurb

Gideon McCade--weighed down by memories of his previous life as a Navy SEAL and a CIA agent--has blood on his hands. He turns to his BDSM club, Catharsis, and Dominating submissives to get him through the daily grind of civilian life. Knowing his past is too much to inflict on a life partner, he keeps his connections brief and superficial. When his former life comes back to haunt him, his desire for revenge pulls him back into the shadows, darkening his hopes for a future in the light.

Temporarily sidelining his career as a tattoo artist, Sebastian Phillips works as a composite artist for the local police department. To alleviate the inescapable burden of a congenital medical condition, he immerses himself in his art and seeks the catharsis of submission. But with life weighing heavily on his shoulders and darkness encroaching, he yearns for a contract with a Dominant that sees past the protective barriers he's erected to the vulnerable submissive within.

When happenstance brings Gideon and Sebastian together, their connection is undeniable. The knowledge that they are both too damaged to form permanent bonds of love causes them to rely on an impersonal contract to fulfil their physical needs. But staying emotionally detached becomes impossible, and breaking their contract seems the only option. Will Gideon's need for vengeance and Sebastian's declining health destroy what's grown between them, or will they help each other find their way back into the light?

Carra's Review

Luna David has been on my authors-to-watch list from her first release, and in Saving Sebastian she doesn’t just nail it, her writing truly soars.  The characters of Sebastian and Gideon are complicated, each strong in their own way, but also vulnerable and closed off.  The thing is, once you put the two of them together, they each become what the other needs—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.

Sebastian’s character is simply astounding.  Even given his health and personal issues, he still has tremendous strength and is independent, though he still craves submission.  I truly admired him for his self-reliance even facing everything he was, and he’s become one of my favorite characters of all the books I’ve read so far this year.  The author really triggered my emotions with Sebastian, with his reliance only on himself and his disbelief that his circle of friends not just exists, but continues to grow throughout the story.

Gideon is the absolute definition of a Dom, nurturing and in control.  He has plenty of demons in his past, some that come rearing their heads in the present day to slam the reader right back into the cold, hard world.

Gideon and Sebastian together?  Incredible, sensual, deeply emotional and just amazing to read.  There is drama and pain, balanced by tenderness and pure love.  Gideon and Sebastian’s D/s scenes are magnificently erotic, detailed and they demonstrate the unconditional trust between the two men.  Their journey is difficult, but captured my attention right from the start, making this book one that I’d definitely classify as unputdownable.

Saving Sebastian is a fantastic story, and for me was a clear 5-star read that landed solidly on my Top Recommendations list.  It’s emotional and searingly hot, and if you’re a fan of M/M erotic BDSM romance, it’s going to probably push every one of your buttons.  This book is meant strictly for readers 18+ for adult language, sexual content, and some graphic scenes involving Gideon’s more unsavory activities, including torture.  While this story is part of a series, it can still be read as a standalone, though you will probably want to read the first two books before starting Saving Sebastian—just to get the background on the supporting characters that appear in this book.

Author Bio

Once upon a time... deep in the shadows of the infamous BDSM club Catharsis, Luna David, future Authoress Extraordinaire, dreamed of crafting epic gay romance novels to the chorus of whips, chains, and riding crops.

Working for the man by day, and playing caped crusader by night, she fell in love with a superhero whose alter-ego was a mild-mannered financial analyst. With the combined strength of their Evasion Superpowers, they're able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, and escape the horrifying drudgery of peopling and adulting as often as humanly possible.

Luna fiercely devotes herself to her amazing family and friends, drinks coffee like the life-giving ambrosia that it is, and reads gay romance novels voraciously. And while watching a movie and cuddling is still the perfect date night for her and her superhero hubby, her favorite moments are when he makes her laugh until she cries and can't help but fall in love with him over and over again.

Life for the superhero duo seemed perfect until the birth of twins threw their world into delightful and exhausting chaos, proving perfection always has room for improvement. Leaving big business behind, The Adorables became her full-time job. But eventually Luna realized it was the perfect time to follow her dreams, so she hung up her cape, donned her rainbow slippers and Wonder Woman pajamas, and dove into her fictional world. When not saving her little monsters from themselves or overseeing the Dungeon, Luna slays fictitious evildoers between the pages of her manuscripts.

Her books feature strong dominant males and the men they would die protecting. With love, her hero, and their monsters in her corner, Luna spends her free time writing sweet and kinky, sensual and erotic gay romance. Love has no gender and no boundaries-and Luna loves nothing more than giving her heroes the same HEA she's been lucky enough to enjoy every day.

SYNOPSIS

All I ever wanted was to serve and protect my country. It ended up costing me everything…

At 49, Vincent St. James has learned to live with the choices he’s made, even if he isn’t always proud of them. After the military he was practically born into decided his sexuality was more important than his impeccable service record, Vincent lost everything, including the man he’d planned to spend the rest of his life with.

And a man with nothing to live for has nothing to lose.

With a bone deep hatred of all things government, Vincent found another way to serve his country, but it too came at a steep cost that he never could have foreseen. Dealing in secrets and death means there’s always someone waiting around the next corner trying to either take his place or bury their secrets along with his body. Even if he wanted out, it’s far too late for that.

When he’s given the chance to help out a friend who once had his back when others didn’t, he jumps at the chance to repay the favor. Even if it means protecting the kind of man he despises most…a power-hungry politician looking to push his own agenda on an unsuspecting public.

I made a terrible choice three years ago and it cost me the only person who ever really mattered to me. But maybe there’s another way I can make things right…

30-year-old Nathan Wilder can’t take back the moment he betrayed his twin brother, but he can try to make sure that the legacy of hate that drove him to turn on Brody never has a chance to rear its ugly head again. And if that means going against his powerful father’s right-wing political constituency in a down and dirty race for a seat in the U.S. Senate, then so be it. But when the threats that had been limited to harmless emails start taking an uglier turn, culminating in a violent attack that leaves no doubt as to the assailant’s intent, Nathan is thrown into the direct path of a mysterious and dangerous man who may end up forcing Nathan to confront truths he just isn’t ready to face yet.

Protecting him was supposed to be a favor for a friend and nothing more. Once he’s safe, I’ll let him go. I have to…

Protecting Nathan was supposed to be a walk in the park for a guy like Vincent. But nothing about the younger man is what he’d been expecting, especially the long-dead feelings Nathan stirs in him.

The feelings that aren’t just about protection.

Which is a problem, because while the threat against Nathan is temporary, the danger that’s become a way of life for Vincent is just waiting for the next thing it can take from him. Caring about someone means painting a target on their back and Vincent is done losing people he loves.

But letting Nathan go may not be as easy at seems…especially when Nathan decides to finally stand up and fight for what…and who he truly wants.

EXCERPT

As I was tucking my phone into my pocket, I saw Nathan grab his off the floor.
When he went to put it in his shirt pocket, I shook my head and said, “No, that stays here.”
“I need my phone,” Nathan said.
“You need it more than you need to breathe?” I asked impatiently. “Because it’s traceable.” I reached for it to take it away from him, but he stepped back. I got into his space and ripped the phone from his hand. “Is your career really more important than your life?” I ground out. “Because it sure as sh*t isn’t more important than mine.” I dropped the phone to the floor and made a move to crush it under my heel, but Nathan suddenly lunged forward.
“Don’t!” he yelled. My instincts took over and I grabbed him by the arms and swept his legs from underneath him, taking us both to the floor. He let out a whoosh of air as my body crashed down on his. Too late, I remembered the way he’d been holding his side after the earlier attack.
But I didn’t apologize.
“You lay your hands on me one more time-”
“My brother’s messages!” Nathan shouted, his voice thick with emotion.
“What?” I asked, startled.
Nathan drew in several breaths. “I want the phone because it has my brother’s voicemail messages on it,” he whispered. His whiskey-colored eyes met mine. “Please,” he murmured.
I suddenly became very aware of his hard body sprawled beneath mine. During the scuffle, one of my legs had gotten wedged between his, putting our c*cks precariously close to one another. I had his hands pinned to the floor and I could feel his body trembling beneath mine.
I knew it was likely just the lingering shock, but I couldn’t deny what having him completely at my mercy was doing to me. Especially since he wasn’t fighting me. I hadn’t given much thought to whether or not Nathan was gay like his brother, but I sure as sh*t was thinking about it now.
“Please,” Nathan repeated, and a perverse part of me wondered what he was actually asking me for. I knew I needed to get off him, but I found myself reluctant to move. Nathan’s fingers flexed, drawing my gaze to them. It would be so easy to move my hands up to link my fingers with his. I shifted slightly to take the pressure off the knee that I had wedged between his legs, but the move caused my d*ck to brush his. I jerked my eyes to Nathan’s when I heard him let out the tiniest of whimpers.
“Let me up,” he suddenly said, and then he was pushing at me. I could have easily kept him there on the floor like that and taken what I wanted…a taste of him. But I shifted off him instead and then snatched his phone off the floor. Nathan struggled to his feet, but didn’t try to grab the phone again.
My brain told my fingers to drop the damn thing so I could crush it, because anything less wasn’t safe. But my body disobeyed the order and instead, I turned the phone off and handed it to Nathan. “Leave it off.”
I turned to head towards the hallway leading to the front door, but stopped when Nathan said, “Wait.”
I forced myself to turn around. “What?”
“I don’t even know your name.”
There were a million things I could have said to him, none of which included actually giving him my name. Just like with the phone, it wasn’t safe for him to know who I was.
“Vincent,” I said.
“Vincent,” Nathan murmured, more to himself than anything else. “Thank you, Vincent.”
I didn’t want his thanks. I didn’t want anything from him except to eliminate the threat against him and then get the hell away from him.
“Let’s go,” was all I said, though, and then I turned away, not really caring if he followed.
