Blurb

Jamie's life is one big financial mess, and it really isn't his fault. However, the last thing he expected to find in the library was a Good Samaritan. He might have been suspicious of Guy's motives at first, but it soon becomes apparent that his savior is a good man who has been lucky in life and is looking to pay it forward. Guy being gay is not a problem. Jamie's not interested... or so he thinks.

Guy is happy to help Jamie, and the two men get along fine. But when Jamie's curiosity leads him from one thing to another, Guy finds himself looking at the younger man with new eyes. What started out as a hand up is now something completely different...

Carra's Review

If you’re relying on just the blurb to decide if you want to read Step by Step, I must tell you that you should look deeper.  If I had made the decision on whether or not to read this by just reading the blurb, I may have passed this by.  I’m already a fan of this author, so I figured I’d just go for it since I haven't read anything by her yet that I haven’t liked.  When Step by Step starts off, I was still a bit unsure given the premise—after all, it does seem like it could turn into something a bit…off with the offer Guy proposes to Jamie—but the further in I got, the more genuine Guy seemed, even if their arrangement is unconventional.

What followed Guy and Jamie’s first encounter and the atypical relationship they began was a journey of self discovery for Jamie, and the development of a lasting friendship and eventually love between the two men.  Though Jamie purports to be straight at the start of the story, his curiosity, then attraction leads him down the rabbit hole where he uncovers his true self which he explores with Guy-falling for him along the way.  Their relationship develops at a natural, easy pace and never feels rushed.  Guy and Jamie are really good for each other, each complementing the other, and Jamie does come across as truly sincere with his feelings toward Guy—not like he’s just experimenting.

To me, Guy does come across as older than his 38 years, but that was just my perception.  I like how he’s paying forward the help he received as a younger man, and how he encourages Jamie to do the same once he’s in a place to do so.  It’s a positive message, yet doesn’t come across as cheesy or like there’s an agenda to the story.  The age difference between Guy and Jamie doesn’t feel like it’s a factor to me, at least not between the two of them…what other characters may think is another story.  But the two of them work beautifully together, and while at first it may not seem like there’s any chemistry, it sure as heck develops as the two of them grow closer.

There are some really good supporting characters—John-bar owner and Guy’s friend, Ryan-Jamie’s best friend and a great sounding board for him as he tries to understand his feelings, and Cole-district attorney, Guy’s good friend and Jamie’s career idol—these guys are all standouts for me, and at the very least I hope we’ll be getting Cole’s story (especially with the little secrets we never found out about near the end of the book), and Ryan’s as well.

This is a very well written story that kept me drawn in the entire time I was reading.  Step By Step was a 4.5-star read for me, and I do highly recommend it to M/M romance fans-particularly if you like stories where there is an age gap between the main characters.  This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and M/M sexual content.

Author Bio

Born and raised in the north-west of England, K.C. WELLS always loved writing. Words were important. Full stop. However, when childhood gave way to adulthood, the writing ceased, as life got in the way. K.C. discovered erotic fiction in 2009, when the purchase of a
ménage storyline led to the startling discovery that reading about men in love was damn hot. In 2012, arriving at a really low point in life led to the desperate need to do something creative. An even bigger discovery waited in the wings-writing about men in love was even hotter...

K.C. now writes full-time and is loving every minute of her new career. The laptop still has no idea of what hit it... it only knows that it wants a rest, please. And it now has to get used to the idea that where K.C goes, it goes.

And as for those men in love that she writes about? The list of stories just waiting to be written is getting longer... and longer...

K.C. loves to hear from readers.
